The market for manual laborers was besieged by a frenzied mob of buyers.

Muscles were flexed, eyes and teeth inspected, prices and bids bellowed into the crowd. The slave market was a small square on the edge of the merchants’ quarter. The merchandise had been standing on the hot, stained planks of the sellers’ platform since the morning green. There was no shelter from the heat and no water; no movement was tolerated. Overseers loaded groups of chained individuals onto ships.
